Biography

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, composer Alex Ma (alexmacomposer.wixsite.com/home) currently studies at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under Sky Macklay (skymacklay.com). Notable performers of his work range from SEM Ensemble in New York and Ars Futura in Cleveland to his fellow Peabody collaborators in Baltimore. His writing is informed by his performance experience in varied settings, including chamber choirs, jazz ensembles, a cappella groups, symphony orchestras, wind bands, percussion ensembles, electric ensembles, and more. His music, which traverses diverse idioms in classical and popular styles, aims to be both emotionally rich and radically accessible.
